History:
Greenwood was a folk duo based in Wyckoff, New Jersey. Greenwood was centered around husband and wife duo Doug and Betsy Ruffle. Doug was a singer-songwriter and guitarist who wrote many original tunes for the group. Greenwood went into the studio and recorded one album in 1976 titled “Remember The Promise”. The album was comprised mostly of Doug Ruffle’s original gospel inspired folk tunes. The rest of the album consisted of covers of traditional folk tunes and a couple traditional gospel numbers.
Joining Greenwood in the studio were John Holly on bass guitar and Al Previto on lead acoustic guitar. It’s unclear if either Previto or Holly were official members of the band at any point. Previto was a solo gospel artist in the early 1970’s. The album is mostly a folk affair with heavy christian gospel leanings. Some tracks feature a more acoustic folk rock direction.
Doug Ruffle’s lyrics give off a sense of contempt for non-christians which is something I have not heard before and was quite shocked by. This energy is mostly present in the tunes “Remember The Promise” and “When Jacob Was A Child”.
The group did not record any other material and most likely left the music business in the late 1970's.
Remember The Promise (1976, Not On Label)
Rating: 6/10
Not a terrible album at all despite its gospel leanings. I quite like a few of the more softer tunes they do. “Remember The Promise” with its edgy lyricism and poignant dual vocal is very good. “When Jacob Was A Child” is similar with nice lead guitar and a stunning vocal by Betsy. “Prayer Of St. Francis” is a nice cover with the incorporation of “Canon In D”. The duo’s stab at “Love Is A Verb” is a pretty arrangement too. Lots of mediocre tracks on this one, especially the upbeat tunes like “Early In The Morning” and “All I Am”. Only track on here I didn’t like at all was “Swing Low” which I just don’t like in general. Overall a solid but not outstanding christian folk / acoustic album with mostly original material (7/12 tunes).
