History:
Jerry Way is a musician from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. Way's first recording was with his first band Jerry Way and The Way Outs. The rock and roll band released one single in 1963 titled "Castaway Of Love" with "That's Why I Am Happy" on the flip. Way wrote both tracks. It was released on Wisconsin label Coulee.
By the 1970's Way was a solo artist. In 1977, he was comissioned to write and produce a gospel album. He worked with two local church groups on the album: St. Charles Folksingers and Children's Voices. I assume the St. Charles Church comissioned this album and Way was likely a parishoner there. Way was the featured artist on the album, composing and singing lead vocals on all but two songs.
Way's backing band of Chippewa Falls area musicians was called The Musical Friends. The Musical Friends included Doug Wozniak on banjo and guitar. Wozniak had his own folk rock single on Coulee in the early 1970's. The album "Joysongs" was completed in 1977 and released on RPC. It's quite an elusive album to find. Most of the album is country influenced folk rock with a lot dueling electric piano and banjo.
Way returned to the studio in 1979 to record his first real solo album. The album was titled "Jukebox" and featured a variety of original songs, including country, folk rock, pop rock, and country rock tunes. Way played lead guitar, electric, classical, and acoustic guitars, and even bass guitar on that recording.
Way recorded more music, including a CD in 2000. He was a music instructor for many years but has since retired. In recent years, Way has been involved in plays. He has done some playwrighting, arranging, musical direction, and performing. He also played guitar in a local bluegrass troupe called The Swampers and appeared solo virtually throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. He seems to be active on BandCamp, which is linked below for those interested:
Joysongs (1977, RPC)
Rating: 6/10
Some not too shabby folk / country rock tunes here. The Children's Choir drags the grade down a bit but that’s to be expected. I like the prominent electric piano on here and Way's vocals are pretty good. The opener "Here I Am Lord" is a nice country folk tune a la John Denver or Glen Campbell. Nice banjo and electric piano and I love the lyrics.
"God Loves You" is similar with more banjo and electric piano but features nice harmony vocals from the album’s engineer. Wish it was longer! "When Your Kingdom Comes", "The Lord Is My Shepherd", and "The Lord’s Prayer" are nice too. Rest of the album is pretty mediocre and there are a couple bad children’s tunes.
Jukebox (1979, RPC)

Again, some real gems and a good amount of mediocre tunes. "Pennsylvania Man" really resonated with me after my first listen. I am a man from Pennsylvania after all. Great folk rock song. I really like the vibe and lyrics. "Seasons Come, Seasons Go" is a nice folk tune too. "It's A Beautiful World" is one that has stuck with me. It's a weird track but I like the dual vocals and country guitar work. “Just Hold Me” is a lovely ballad with some nice keyboards.
There are some duds on here, like "Disco Polka Time". That's just a really bad experiment. Lot of meh country tunes as well and many are the tracks are a bit derivative.
