History:
Michael Sullivan was a christian folk / rock singer-songwriter from West Carrollton, Ohio. Not much is known about Sullivan. He was a multi-instrumentalist and only involved in Christian gospel recordings. Sullivan released his only album, "Glad Songs Of Victory" in 1973. The album was recorded and released through MGMA, a local Ohio gospel recording label.
Sullivan's album was marketed as a religious folk album, but it contains mostly folk rock tunes with some reverby vocals. The album features Sullivan on vocals, acoustic guitars, bass guitar, and electric guitars on "Arise And Shine". The bass guitar was recorded really low in the mix, probably due to the sloppiness. It also completely absent on other tracks. Louis Kasnia played drums, percussion, and tambourine on the session.
Nothing else is known about Sullivan after this album. I believe he sold these albums through his local church. If you have any more info on him, please shoot me an email!
Glad Songs Of Victory (1973, MGMA)
Rating: 6.5/10
Suprisingly solid basement folk / folk rock by a solid singer. There is obviously a lot of room for improvment here (some louder bass guitar would help!) but it's still a solid listen overall. Very preachy lyrics but the music is solid. "Arise And Shine" and "His Voice" are easily the standouts. Both are good folk rock tunes with strong backbeat drumming. I like the melodic "The Shout Of A King" too. It's just a nice song overall. Not really any bad material just some meh tracks. "Turn To Me" is a knockoff of Elvis' cover of "Are You Lonesome Tonight".
